Summary: Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

My Thoughts:  I just adore Rachel Vincent! I always jump at reading her books. I’ve liked her young adult and adult novels both. Her worlds are just so amazing!

We are introduced to Nina who is just a girl. She goes to school, has a sister named Mellie, and has a mother. She isn’t very close to her mother since her mother has been in a downward spiral and sleeps a lot.  The girls barely make ends meat and sometimes Nina has to steal and do things she’s not proud of just to get a can of soup.

Nina has a plan. She’s going to join the church and go from there. But when Mellie changes that plan, Nina gets thrust into a war she didn’t even know really existed.  I don’t want to say much about the plot because it’s so interesting and confusing at the same time. I did like it though. It spiced things up.

Nina also meets a boy named Finn. That was one weird situation. I thought it was interesting but it was crazy! Took a while to get used too. I really liked Finn from the minute I met him. He was so fun loving and just cute! I also loved all the other side characters as well. I was happy to get to know them and learn about their stories.  Violence does happen in this one and it’s not all rainbows. I almost cried a few times.

I was so sucked into this story. It had amazing characters and a great plot.

I can’t wait to read more about Finn and Nina!

Overall:  I really loved this one! Read it quickly in just a few days. When I wasn't reading, I wanted to read. Thats how good it was.

Cover:  Like it! Like the colors and the butterfly!
