Siren by Tricia Rayburn
Release Date: July 13, 2010
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 352
Summary: Vacationing in Winter Harbor, Maine, is a tradition for Vanessa and Justine Sands, and that means spending time with the Carmichael boys. This summer, Vanessa is determined to channel some of her older sister’s boldness, get over her fear of the ocean, and maybe turn her friendship with Simon Carmichael into something much more.
But when Justine goes cliff-diving after a big family argument, and her body washes ashore the next day, Vanessa is sure that it was more than an accident. She is more certain of this, when she discovers that her sister was keeping some big secrets and Caleb Carmichael’s gone missing. Suddenly, the entire oceanfront town is abuzz when a series of grim, water-related accidents occur, with the male victims washed ashore grinning from ear to ear.
Vanessa and Simon team up to figure out if these creepy deaths have anything to do with Justine and Caleb. But will what Vanessa discovers mean the end of her summer romance, or even life as she knows it?
My Thoughts: I don't know why I didn't read this in 2010 when it came out. It was one of those books I put off reading. I bought it when it first came out than it sat on my shelf for a year.
I'm happy I finally read it! We are introduced to Vanessa and Justine, sister's who couldn't be more different. Vanessa is quiet, responsible, reserved while Justine is outgoing, popular, and a risk taker. They spend lots of time together as sisters do, but even more so during a certain part of year along with brothers Caleb and Simon. Caleb is a little younger than Justine and Simon is a bit older than Vanessa. They have basically grew up together though. Justine and Caleb "like" each other and make out quite a bit, while Vanessa and Simon were always just friends.
An accident (or is it?) leaves Vanessa without a sister, parents who are depressed and concerned, and two boys who don't know what to do. Caleb up and runs away, and Simon is left concerned and not sure what to do.
Vanessa can't stand not knowing what happened. Vanessa makes a pledge to find out exactly what happened to her sister. She teams up with Simon to find Caleb and figure out the whole story.
I loved how determined Vanessa was and how sensitive she was. I loved that Caleb was a bit head-strung. I just loved that Simon was a geeky guy. He wasn't the hot smoldering popular guy that are usually in YA books. He was nerdy and smart. He was such a great character. I also loved all the other characters, Paige, Betty, Oliver, her parents, and I loved to hate Zara. I saw a lot of character development in this one as well.
I haven't read much about mermaids being sirens very much. It was such an interesting concept and I can't wait to read more from Rayburn.
Want to know what happens? Does Vanessa get the answers she's looking for? Siren also has romance sprinkled in!
Overall: I really really enjoyed it. I liked all the characters, it held my interest, part romance, part mystery, part mermaids, overall it was a wonderfully written novel.
Cover: Its a little weird. The girls face really does stick out at you though, especially her eyes. Its weird, but I like it.

Hmm this doesn't really sound like something I would read. I do like mermaid but the story sounds a little all over the place.
Thanks for the great review though. :)
I enjoyed this one! I'm trying to get my hands on Undercurrent cause I have to know what happens next! Thanks for the review!
