My Thoughts: I'll admit it, I do look at covers and if I really love them I'll read the book. If I don't, it might sit on my TBR pile a while. I had kept putting off reading Saving June. I'm not sure why, I just didn't pick it right up. Finally, after a few other bloggers kept recommending it to me saying I'll like it because it’s contemporary, I finally caved in and read it. And I'm so happy they bugged me until I did!
We are introduced to Harper who just lost her sister June. June killed herself. Harper is left to pick up all the pieces, but she's so torn apart herself she doesn't know how. Her mom is a mess, her persistent aunt is staying with them, and her parents are divorced so her dad's not around very much.
Harper is just trying to get through each day without totally losing it. Even though she's confused and misses June, she doesn't cry. Even though she knows she should be emotional, she tells everyone she is okay. June was always the perfect one, while Harper was constantly screwing up.
At the wake, a mysterious boy shows up and talks to Harper. Harper and her best friend Laney end up running into the guy again. His name is Jake Tolan. He's 18 years old, a bit older than Harper.
Harper and Laney plan to go to California to spread June's ashes. June always dreamed of going to California, so in Harper's eyes, this is the perfect resolution.
The two girls find themselves on a road trip with Jake. They come from Michigan so its quite the long trip. Jake can be irritating, annoying, sarcastic, and he and Harper are always getting on one anothers nerves.
The three make a lot of pit stops along the way, some events emotional, some sad, and some enjoyable.
More than anything Harper wants to know why June didn't leave a note, or why she did it. How could Harper not tell she was upset or sad? Why didn't Harper see it?
Saving June was such an emotional roller coaster. It was beautiful though. I loved this story because most of it takes place on a road trip and I loved all the characters. I loved learning their quirks, and more about their personalities. I also loved all the music references throughout the book. The way music can make you feel is something special. It can take the way you feel and put it into words. There are songs out there for everyone.
I'm so glad I gave Saving June a chance because I really enjoyed it. And Jake is a cutie. Jake and Harper together make an interesting duo. There were also a lot of secrets revealed about Jake throughout the book. He did have a pretty dark secret but I understood why he did what he did.
Saving June was another one of those debuts in 2011 you should read.
Overall: I really enjoyed it. Such real characters and a real plot. This plot actually makes loads of sense, it could happen to anyone and you could be put in the place of Harper, left to pick up all the pieces. Such an amazing and beautiful story.
Cover: This is one of the reasons I didn't pick it right up. I've seen both covers and don't love either of them. I didn't really like the cover very much. Just didn't catch my eye fast enough. But, the description and characters are worth picking it up for!!

I loved this book..and frankly I was surprised how much I did love it. I wasnt expecting the story I got. It quickly became one of my Top Ten books of 2011...
I have to agree with you on the cover. It kept me from being eager to pick it up as well. I loved it too, and I for some reason didn't think I'd like it as much as I did.

Everyone seems to be saying great things about this one. I love that you said it was a story that anyone could be a part of. Sometimes the paranormal stories just get on my nerves because it could never really happen. Glad that this contemporary really stood out to you.
