Drink Slay Love by Sarah Beth Durst
Release Date: September 13, 2011
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 400
Summary:Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire... fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops.
Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast -- as the entrees.
The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?
My Thoughts; When I first saw the cover of this book, I thought to myself: oh pretty! I read the description and thought, that could be interesting.
Me and my friend Jennifer starting reading this one at about the same time, and she finished much sooner than me. Heck, I didn't even finish! She said she liked it enough to give it 4 stars.
We are introduced to Pearl who is sixteen years old and a vampire. She sees a unicorn, and also realizes she can be out in the sun. Weird huh for a vampire? Her family enlists her to go on a mission and attend school where she can scout out possible families for them to feed on.
She meets a few friends, and really that is all that happened as far as I got. I don't even think I got to the climax before I stopped reading.
I got to about page 200 before I quit reading. I just couldn't focus and I didn't even care what happened to Pearl, her family, or her friends. Or her boyfriend (you know the one with the weird name) whom I did not like.
I think Drink Slay Love has an interesting concept. I even think that if I had read it 4 years ago, I would have enjoyed it more. I loved Twilight, I love vampire books, but I think now I am more into love triangles, faeries, and other weird creatures.
You will probably enjoy Drink Slay Love but sadly I just couldn't get into it and it was hard for me to focus or really care about any of the characters. It has gotten a lot of positive reviews, so I may just be the odd girl out here.
Overall: Just couldn't get into it, leading me not to finish it! I didn't connect with Pearl and I didn't connect with any of the characters. It earns 2/5 Cupcakes! 2 cupcakes means I didn't finish the book. 1 cupcake is reserved for books I finish and hate!
