Summary: On her sixteenth birthday, Anastasija Parker's present winds up being the shock of a lifetime. When her mom referred to her absentee dad as a deadbeat it was actually half true -- he's a vampire. And a king, no less. A king who wants his daughter to assume her rightful position at his side. But, thanks to Ana's mother, the blood of a witch also runs through her veins....
Too bad vampires and witches are mortal enemies.
With her parents gearing up for an all out brawl over her destiny, Ana's about ready to scream. But things get even crazier when a male witch and a brooding bad boy vampire start vying for her affection. Then the barely leashed tension between the vampires and the witches starts to boil over, and Ana has to figure out once and for all if she wants to become heir to her dad's throne. And deciding your eternal destiny is a pretty big deal for a girl who just wants to get through high school.
My Thoughts: Almost To Die For is a light breezy vampire novel. We are introduced to Ana who is turning 16 and is supposed to be initiated into a full blown witch coven. Of course, she has never really felt like she had any magic. She's tried and tried to feel magic but always fails at it. On the night of her 16th birthday, right before her initiation, a strange guy shows up at her door, he claims to be her father!!! She than finds out he's the vampire king which makes her a vampire princess! Oh My!
Both her mother and father are fighting for her support and they both want her to embrace her destiny. I liked seeing her personal dilemmas and how it effected her actions on which side to choose.
Now, lets talk about the two love interests. First there was Nikolai who she has known for a while. She's always thought he was a cutie and had a crush on him. He's also a little bit older than her, is a male witch and a future vampire hunter. Than there is Elias who is a older vampire (who knows how old he really is) and is high up in their society. He seems like a sincere guy but we don't know much about his history. Both guys express feelings in Ana so she's confused on which one she likes better. She has feelings for both for different reasons. In my opinion, both of them were swoon-worthy and either one may become a major love interest in upcoming books.
I also liked Ana's friendships with Bea and Taylor. I liked the way she would talk to them and how she actually did spend some time in school.
Overall: Honestly, I really enjoyed Almost To Die For. It was a refreshing vampire tale that wasn't too in depth on the origins and was kept simple. It was what I would call, light and breezy. It didn't require a lot of thinking and was just a fun book to read.
Cover: I like the cover. I didn't even notice her eyes until I looked at the cover more closely.
